A redesign of an editorial piece from DAZED magazine. This was a project undertaken for a typography course at The University of Texas at Austin. Original photography by Jeff Bark.
While the original spread utilized full bleed imagery, I wanted to add a more refined design to the spread by using typography, layout, and color to reflect the content of the article as mentioned in the synopsis.
By pulling violet and gold tones from the original photograph and mirroring the composition of the typography with the framing of photo, I was able to convey a sense of royalty that both the title of the cover story and the mentioning of Nicki Minaj’s rap empire. In addition to purple and gold colors and a baroque typography choice traditionally being used to communicate royalty, the mirroring tightly bound composition on both ends references portraiture, another long-standing royal symbol. I also utilized a rather unusual arrangement for the title with in order to add a bit of the eccentricity and surreal feeling that the synopsis mentions. Ultimately an attempt at directly reflecting what the reader has in store for them simply through the use of design choices.
